As adults, we may spend time breaking some patterns and strengthening others. And, no matter how far we think we've come, when we go home, we often find ourselves slipping back into old dynamics.
Here is my practice for the holidays:
1. Watch and listen: Observe my thoughts and behaviors and observe the actions of people around me. With kindness and, hopefully, a sense of humor.
2. Pause: What is my usual pattern or reaction? Instead of doing whatever that might be, pause. Wait. Relax. Wait. Respond. Maybe try something different.
3. Remember: Just as I have my story and thoughts that narrate my life, so does everyone else. Question my own story and make room for another's experience. Soften my heart.
4. Selfcare: Spend some time each day moving, breathing deeply and taking some time to be alone. If I have 5 minutes, I'll do it for 5 minutes. If I have longer, I'll do it for longer. And it doesn't have to look the same every day.
