And then we can choose. We can choose to react, to follow the habitual grooves of behaviors that we have trod over years. Or we can try something different. Pause. Relax. Take a deep breath. And then decide what to do. With compassion. And strength.
You don't need to have a calm mind to be able to sit quietly. Sitting quietly while watching the mind hop around, and staying relaxed while it hops, takes strength. Staying in a challenging pose (which, for some people, is a restorative pose) and breathing and relaxing, takes strength. And over time, we can train our minds. We can train ourselves to respond with humor and kindness, towards both ourselves and others.
And that, my friends, is a gift.
